Anthony was born in June 1913 in Tynemouth.1  Anthony's father was Thomas Osbourn Pickles and his mother was Margaret McDowell.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Osbourn Pickles and Isabella Wood. He had two brothers and a sister, named Stanley, Alan and Violet.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 69 in 1982.
