Mary was born on March 27th, 1852 in St. Helens and her baptism took place on May 23rd, 1852 in Prescot.1 2  Mary's father was Thomas Millington and her mother was Ellen Lloyd.  Her paternal grandparents were James Millington and Alice Millington. She had three brothers named James, John and William.  She was the second youngest of the four children.

‌Mary and James were married in a religious ceremony in 1876 in St. Helens.3  They had a son and a daughter, named William and Priscilla.
