Winifred was born in June 1900 in Sharples.1  Winifred's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Anne Charnock.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Mary Harvey (Douglas). She had a sister named Mary.  She was the younger of the two children.
