William was born in 1800 in Montrose and his baptism took place there on May 15th, 1800.1  William's father was Colin Mather and his mother was Ann Allan. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Cast Iron, James, Jamas, Isabel and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 51 in 1851.
