William was born in March 1744 in Edensor and his baptism took place there on May 13th, 1744.1  William's father was William Mather and his mother was Ann Booth.  His paternal grandparents were Roland Mather and Elizabeth Burrows. He had a brother and three sisters, named Roland, Mary, Elizabeth and Hellen.  He was the youngest of the five children.
