William was born in April 1834 in Breightmet and his baptism took place on June 1st, 1834 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  William's father was John Mather and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Dearden.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and <unknown>. He had a brother and two sisters, named William, William and Mary.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named George and Sarah.  He died at 9 months old in January 1835 in Breightmet.  His burial was on January 18th, 1835 at Christ Church, Ainsworth.2
