This Thomas Mather is the likely son to Thomas Mather of Withnell (1796-1825) who died aged 29. As orphaned, he was taken in by Ralph and Ann, but not their child or grandson (since they didnt have a son Thomas).
In 1841, Thomas (20) was a painter, most likely a grandson of Ann Mather (probably not illegitimate as none found).
