Thomas was born in 1814 in Farnworth and his baptism took place there on August 20th, 1814.1  Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Higginbottom. He had a brother and a sister, named Charles and Ellen.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
