Charles was born in 1823 in Farnworth and his baptism took place there on September 3rd, 1823.1  Charles' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Higginbottom. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Ellen.  He was the youngest of the three children.
