Sarah was born on December 28th, 1852 in Salford and her baptism took place on August 14th, 1853 at Manchester Cathedral.1 2  Sarah's father was James Mather and her mother was Maria Beresford.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Sarah (Sally) Stewart. She had two sisters named Elizabeth and Mary.  She was the youngest of the three children.
