Mary was born in 1843 in Manchester and her baptism took place on December 24th, 1843 at Manchester Cathedral.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Maria Beresford.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Sarah (Sally) Stewart. She had two sisters named Elizabeth and Sarah.  She was the second oldest of the three children.
