Samuel was born on July 5th, 1650. Samuel's father was Timothy Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Atherton. His paternal grandparents were Rev Richard Mather and Katherine Holt. He had four brothers and a sister, named Richard, Nathaniel, Joseph, Atherton and Katharine. He was the oldest of the six children.
