Richard's father was Timothy Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Atherton. His paternal grandparents were Rev Richard Mather and Katherine Holt. He had four brothers and a sister, named Samuel, Nathaniel, Joseph, Atherton and Katharine. He was the second oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 34 on August 17th, 1688.
