Ralph was born in December 1864 in Chorlton (Lancs).1  Ralph's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Taylor.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Catharine Chandler. He had a sister named Elizabeth.  He was the younger of the two children.
