Norman's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Alice Holden. His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Joanna Grey. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Harold, Tom, Percy, Annie and Alice. He died in 1898 in Halliwell. His burial was in 1898 at St. Peter (Halliwell).
