James was born in June 1851 in Darlington.1  James' father was Rev John Mather and his mother was Sarah Marshall. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Mary.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 64 on May 16th, 1916 in Broughton (Salford).2
