James was born on May 22nd, 1846 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on June 25th, 1846 at All Saints (Stand).¹

James' father was Thomas Entwistle and his mother was Rachel Mather. His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Allen. He was an only child. He died at the age of 51 on July 16th, 1897 in Blackley. His burial was in July 1897 in Whitefield.¹¹
