James was born in May 1850 in Bolton and his baptism took place on May 12th, 1850 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  James' father was William Crossland Mather and his mother was Alice Stephenson.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Bleakley.  John Mather and Jane Welsby were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had a brother named James.  He was the younger of the two children.
