James' father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Gradwell.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Mather and Alice Lever. He had two brothers named Edward and Charles.  He was the youngest of the three children.  He died at the age of 3 in June 1844 in Little Bolton.  He was buried on June 24th, 1844 in Bolton.²
