Ellin was born about 1593 in Lowton.

Ellin's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Margaret (Margerite) Abrams. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Margaret (of Newton). She had a brother and two sisters, named Richard, Margaret and Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the four known children.
