General Notes
In the early 1840, about a third of all Mather births registered in Wigan Union were illegitimate.
In 1851, Ellen Mather (33, Unmarried) was living with her sister in Mary Ann Hindley (21). Ellen was a Silk Weaver and had three children, Jane (14), James (11) and John (8), all born in Darwen.
Ellen and <unknown> were living together in a platonic relationship then separated. They had two sons and a daughter, named James, John and Jane.
