Ann was born in December 1837 in Worsley.¹

Ann's father was Peter Mather and her mother was Sarah (Sally) Goodwin. Her paternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley. She had a brother named John. She was the older of the two children. She had four half-sisters named Sarah, Mary, Alice and Betty.
