Richard's father was John George Lee and his mother was Emily Adams. His paternal grandparents were Ricahrd Lee and Elizabeth Brumbell; his maternal grandparents were William Adams and Sarah Ann Downes. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Millicent, Cicely, Doras and Grace. He was the oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 62 on February 23rd, 1950 in Africa.²
