Herbert was born in March 1890 in Manchester.1  Herbert's father was Thomas Lee and his mother was Sarah Jane Mather. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Abraham, Joseph, Samuel, Clara, Fanny and Sarah.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven known children.  He died at the age of 3 in March 1893 in Manchester.2
