James was born in 1832 in Entwistle.1  James' father was William Isherwood and his mother was Mary Hardman. He had four brothers and a sister, named Jonathan, Samuel, John, Henry and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the six children.

‌James and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on December 28th, 1856 at St. Peter's (Bolton).3   The family line is yet to be completed.
