James was born in 1806 in Edgworth and his baptism took place on December 14th, 1806 at Turton Chapel.1  James' father was Henry Isherwood and his mother was Jane Holt. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Ralph, James, John, Jonathan, Mary, Hannah and Peggy.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
