Mary was born in March 1838 in Sharples and her baptism took place on March 11th, 1838 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Mary's father was James Holt and her mother was Fanny Hamer. She had five brothers and a sister, named Robert, Edmund, Thomas, William, James and Esther.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
