James' father was Henry Hilton and his mother was Harriett Booth. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Betty and Fanny. He was the third oldest of the four children.

- Aged 2 in 1861, born Westleigh. NOTE: There is another James Richard Hilton born 1859 at Pendleton, Salford.
  
  In 1911, the other James Richard Hilton from Pendleton was a Storekeeper at the Gas Works, aged 52, married to Annie with nephew Arthur Eaton Rowe. They has a son (alive in 1911)
