Walter's father was Joseph Haslam and his mother was Mary Alice Barlow.  His maternal grandparents were John Nelson Barlow and Alice Hardman. He had five brothers and a sister, named Elizabeth, John, Fred, James, Joseph and Edith.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 70 in January 1974 in Bury.²
