James' father was Joseph Haslam and his mother was Mary Alice Barlow. His maternal grandparents were John Nelson Barlow and Alice Hardman. He had five brothers and a sister, named Elizabeth, John, Fred, Walter, Joseph and Edith. He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
