Ernest was born on May 13th, 1892 in Lichfield.1  Ernest's father was Thomas Handford and his mother was Eliza Woodford. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Bertie, Percy, Alfred, Elizabeth, Phebe, Florence and Lily.  He was the second oldest of the nine known children.

‌Ernest and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony in June 1919 in Lichfield.2  They had three sons and two daughters, named Ernest, Frederick, Douglas, Elizabeth and Joyce.
