Alfred was born in September 1903 in Lichfield.1  Alfred's father was Thomas Handford and his mother was Eliza Woodford. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Ernest, Bertie, Percy, Elizabeth, Phebe, Florence and Lily.  He was the second youngest of the nine known children.
