Herbert was born in 1890. Herbert's father was Michael Ellis Hamer and his mother was Sarah Prudence Cheney. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Hamer and Sarah Jane Stott. He had a sister named Ada. He was the younger of the two children. He died at the age of 79 in 1969.
