Edith was born in October 1896 in Bolton and her christening took place there on October 14th, 1896.1 2  Edith's father was Albert Edward Halliwell and her mother was Mary (Polly) Alice Atherton Tomlinson.  Her maternal grandparents were William Atherton Tomlinson and Harrietta (Harriet) Shepherd. She had a sister named Elsie.  She was the younger of the two children.
