Gertrude's father was Rev David Bickerton Hale and her mother was Emma Campkin.  Her paternal grandparents were David Hale and Mary Millman. She had a brother named David.  She was the younger of the two children.  She died at the age of 53 in April 1923 in Lewisham.²
