Catherine was born in May 1850 in Little Bolton and her baptism took place on May 5th, 1850 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).1 2  Catherine's father was Robert Greenhalgh and her mother was Alice Duxbury. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Jane, William, Ann, Alice and Mary.  She was the youngest of the six known children.
