Matthew's father was Elizabeth Tomlinson and his mother was Thomas Gillibrand Gradwell. His paternal grandparents were James Tomlinson and Mary Ann Healey. He had two brothers named James and George. He was the oldest of the three known children. He died at the age of 46 in September 1939 in Blackpool.¹
