John was born in December 1858 in Barton upon Irwell.1  John's father was John Eddows and his mother was Ann Hall.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Eddowes and Abigail Blythen. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Ralph, William, Abigail, Sarah, Elizabeth and Amelia.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
