Ethel's father was John Fenton Echlin and her mother was Harriet Jane Kennedy. Her paternal grandparents were Sir Ferdinand Fenton Echlin and Mary Cavanagh. She had five brothers and five sisters, named George, William, Alfred, John, Richard, Aileen, Harriet, Evelyn, Martha and Victoria. She died at the age of 44 in October 1933.
