Alfred's father was Sir John Frederick Echlin and his mother was Ellen Patricia Jones. His paternal grandparents were John Fenton Echlin and Harriet Jane Kennedy. He had a brother and a sister, named Norman and Patricia. He died as an infant at just 7 days old on October 4th, 1924.¹
