John's father was Thomas Crow and his mother was Martha Ellen Seymour. His paternal grandparents were William Francis Crow and Elizabeth Liversidge. He had a brother and five sisters, named James, Annie, Mary, Ellen, Emma and Elizabeth. He was the youngest of the seven children.
