Nelly, known as Ellin, was born in 1763 at Colne and her baptism took place on April 24th, 1763 at St. Bartholomew's (Colne).1  Ellin's father was Henry Colthurst and her mother was Mary Midgley. She had a brother and five sisters, named John, Lucy, Lucy, Susan, Nanny and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.

‌Ellin and John were married in a religious ceremony on April 2nd, 1785 in Marsden.2  The family line is yet to be completed.
