Alfred was born in February 1867 in Hyde and his baptism took place on February 17th, 1867 in Godley.1 2  Alfred's father was Samuel Buckley and his mother was Ellen Wharton. He had a brother and three sisters, named Wiliam, Mary, Ada and Annie.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
