Mary was born in March 1840 in Betley.1  Mary's father was Wiliam Brereton and her mother was Mary Steele.  Her paternal grandparents were George Brereton and Margaret Evans. She had a brother and a sister, named William and Ann.  She was the second oldest of the three children.
