Mary was born in January 1779 in Nantwich and her baptism took place on January 24th, 1779 in Acton by Nantwich.1  Mary's father was Rowland Brereton and her mother was Sarah Ashley.  Her paternal grandparents were William Brereton and Sarah Shelley. She had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Mary, Martha, Ann and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the six children.
