Arthur was born on October 13th, 1882 in Ashton-under-Lyne.1  Arthur's father was Samuel Brereton and his mother was Ellen Hodkinson.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Brereton and Mary Dutton. He had a brother and three sisters, named Frank, Annie, Amy and Jessie.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 87 on May 11th, 1970 in Congleton.2

‌Arthur and Emma were married in a civil ceremony in 1915 in Northwich.3
