Ethel's father was Thomas Bowker and her mother was Sarah Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Elizabeth Bostock. She had two brothers and three sisters, named James, Willie, Sarah, Emily and Ellen.  She was the third oldest of the six children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Francis, Nancy and Elizabeth.
