Richard was born in 1813 in Tottington and his baptism took place on January 24th, 1813 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Richard's father was John Booth and his mother was Sarah Scowcroft. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Luke, Robert, Mary, Alice, Sarah and Elizabeth.  He was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
