James was born in July 1815 in Chester and his baptism took place on July 2nd, 1815 at St. Oswalds (Chester).1  James' father was James Berkenhout and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Tomlinson.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Phoebe Owens. He had a brother named John.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at 7 months old in February 1816 at St. Oswalds (Chester).  He was buried on February 14th, 1816 at St. Oswalds (Malpas).2
