William was born in 1781 in Bolton and his christening took place on December 26th, 1781 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  William's father was James Astley and his mother was Mary Bury. He had four brothers and a sister, named John, James, Nicholas, Samuel and Isobel.  He was the fourth oldest of the six children.
